FFBS Reflections on the 2024 Spring Statement

Family Fund Business Services welcomes the extension of the Household Support Fund announced in the Chancellor’s Spring Statement today.

Director of Family Fund Business Services, Phil Henderson said “We welcome this extension to Household Support Funding, which will provide relief to people in need across the country. This vital funding will continue to support people on the lowest incomes access essentials and get practical help with things like furniture and white goods. However, extending for just six months pushes out a cliff edge of support, leaving the future of our clients’ welfare schemes uncertain.”

Responsible for over 26 million grant awards since launch in October 2021, Household Support Funding made up 62% of local welfare spending in 2022/23. We know that 37 English local authorities have closed their local welfare schemes due to lack of funding, meaning today’s announcement will ensure that many local authorities are able to continue to distribute grants to people in need, providing a lifeline for the most vulnerable in our society who have been disproportionately impacted by the rising cost of living.

Phil added “We know from speaking to our clients that demand for crisis support continues to increase, so what matters now is getting this new funding to the people who need it most.”

Family Fund Business Services works in partnership with local authorities, housing associations and charities to distribute welfare funding to those in need. By combining the buying power of our clients and streamlining their processes, we are able to make clients’ funding go further.
