On Wednesday 11 June, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, shared the Government’s plans for public spending over the next few years. It was positive to see investment in Housing and Local Government and reassurance of establishing a stable financial foundation on which to build.

Housing

    • £13.2bn was pledged to the Warm Homes Plan to combat energy poverty and improve energy efficiency of homes

    • £39bn pledged over the next decade for affordable and social housing

Local Government

    • Establishing a new Crisis and Resilience Fund supported by £1bn a year to replace the Household Support Fund

    • Continue its commitment to work towards a single tier of local authorities across the country

    • £3.4bn of grant funding to support the financial sustainability of local Governments per year by 2028-29

Homelessness

    • £100m for early intervention into homelessness via the Transformation Fund

    • Government will also be scrapping the Vagrancy Act by Spring next year, which criminalises rough-sleeping

Welfare

    • Increase funding for employment support and assistance to £3.5bn in 2028-29 to help people back into work

    • Provide £100m within broader spending across Government to help support adults with complex needs

Our Group Director of Income and Engagement, Phil Henderson said “It’s great to see the government putting some serious investment into building much needed affordable and social housing, this provides our housing clients with some reassurance on the future of social housing in the UK. We are also relieved to see plans to develop a replacement scheme for the Household Support Fund, as we see every day how this funding is still desperately needed for households across the country.  We know our clients are still working hard to make their funds stretch further and help more people and we remain committed to supporting them in their endeavours.”
